Elon Musk Trolled for Calling his Social Media Platform Twitter After Rebranding to X

San Francisco: Billionaire Elon Musk is facing online trolling after he mistakenly referred to his own platform, X, as Twitter in a recent tweet. The incident occurred when Musk shared a meme about Brazil’s recent ban on X. The meme depicted a man with wads of cash, captioned, “POV: VPN companies after Brazil banned Twitter,” leading to widespread mockery from netizens.

Musk’s Rebranding Fails

Musk’s slip-up is particularly noteworthy given his efforts to rebrand Twitter to “X” following his $44 billion acquisition of the platform in October 2022. The transformation of the blue bird app into X was part of Musk’s vision to create a super app, but the move was met with significant disapproval and even resulted in a loss of billions of dollars in market value.

Despite the rebrand nearly a year ago, many users and media outlets continue to refer to the platform as Twitter. Posts on X are still commonly called “tweets,” and many news outlets include a disclaimer noting that X was formerly known as Twitter. Even though Musk has been vigorously promoting the X brand, including changing the website URL to X.com in May and conducting polls on user preferences, the old Twitter name and terminology persist in popular use.

Internet Reacts

Commenting on Musk’s rebranding move, one user wrote, “The rebranding is going so well that even the CEO still calls it Twitter.”

Another user reminded Elon, “Elon, the app is called X, not Twitter.”

A third user chimed in, “So you agree it’s still Twitter?”
