New Delhi: Top pacer Jofra Archer might have returned to action after a long injury lay-off though England remain keen to wrap him in a wool. They will monitor his workload after the quick played in England’s T20I series against Australia.
He was picked for the first game in Southampton where he bowled 3.3 overs and claimed two wickets before being rested for the second T20I in Cardiff. The third game in Manchester on Sunday was rained off keeping Archer fresh for the upcoming five-match ODI series.
Poised to play in 50-over format for the first time since March 2023, his workload will be monitored in the series, said England’s interim coach Marcus Trescothick.
England host Australia at five different venues from September 19 to 29 and Archer has already been informed that he will be rested for two matches.
Long-standing injury
“He (Archer) knows the plan. It’s discussed long in advance of picking the team on each day. We know what we’re doing with him, and where we’re going. He is comfortable: he knows what he is doing,” Trescothick said.
“That’s a bigger structure, in terms of what we’re trying to do with Jofra. You come into the series knowing what we’ve got and what we can do with him. That’s an agreed plan between the coaches, directors, physios and all the different people. We’ll still be managing him in the ODIs – exactly the same thing,” he added.
The Barbados-born Archer has struggled with elbow and back injuries that has troubled him since 2020 and kept him out of the ODI World Cup last year. He played in the T20 World Cup in June, having returned to England fold with two T20Is against Pakistan in May.
The right armer was then involved in the Hundred domestic tournament where he was also carefully managed. England have also been bothered with injury to skipper Jos Buttler, who is ruled out of the series.
