Erling Haaland breaks 90-year record to become Norway’s all-time leading goal scorer

New Delhi: Erling Haaland broke Norway’s all-time goalscoring record in their Nations League clash against Slovenia. The 24-year-old braced two goals and helped his side win the match by a scoreline of 3-0. He netted his 33rd international goal in the seventh minute to equalise with Jorgen Juve’s 87-year-old record and then in the second half took the outright record with his record 34th goal for Norway in the 62nd minute.

Haaland achieved the feast in nine fewer matches than Juve who last netted for Norway in 1934. This means the Man City striker broke a record that stood for 90 years to stamp his own mark in the annals of Norway football.

The Manchester City star wore the captain’s armband for the first time, stepping in for the injured Martin Odegaard and marked the occasion with his trademark record-breaking style. The win pushed Norway to the top of Group B3 with seven points, three points ahead of Austria and Slovenia while Kazakhstan remains at the bottom of the table with just one point.

After the match, Haaland shared a picture on social media with the ball under his shirt, captioned with a baby emoji and the word ‘soon’ hinting that his wife Isabel is pregnant.

Looking Ahead…

Haaland’s 34 goals might seem modest compared to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 132 international goals for Portugal, Lionel Messi’s 109 for Argentina, Harry Kane’s 68 for England, or Robbie Keane’s 68 for the Republic of Ireland. However, at just 24 years old, Haaland shattered a decades-old record, showcasing his immense talent and potential to achieve even greater heights in his career.

Another record the Norwegian star might aim for is becoming the leading goalscorer for his country across both genders. Currently, nine female players boast higher tallies than Haaland, with Isabell Herlovsen leading the pack at 67 goals.

Haaland possesses an impressive goal-scoring rate of 0.94 goals per game for Norway. At this rate, he could break Herlovsen’s record in just 73 matches if he continues at the same pace. The former Borussia Dortmund striker has been in great form for his current club Manchester City as well. So far he has scored 11 goals in just 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

Erling Haaland cements his place in history as Norway’s top male scorer with a record-breaking display against Slovenia in the UEFA Nations League.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
