New Delhi: The much-anticipated retention rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season are out now. The IPL governing council held a meeting in Bengaluru on Saturday to finalise the rules ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
One thing which is guaranteed after the new set of IPL player regulations is that all teams will be reshuffled even though some of the mega stars might hold their firm. This window is applicable from 2025 to 2027. Let’s take a quick look at the IPL player retention rules below.
How many players can a IPL franchise retain in IPL 2025?
The IPL franchises can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad. This can be either through retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option. A team can retain/RTM a maximum of 5 capped players (Indians and overseas) and not more than two uncapped players.
What’s the purse value of a IPL franchise in IPL 2025 mega auction?
The auction purse for a particular franchise has been increased to INR 120 crore. In the previous auction in IPL 2024, the franchises were allotted INR 100 crore. The total salary cap will now consist of auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees. Previously in 2024, the total salary cap (auction purse + incremental performance pay) was Rs. 110 Crs which will now be Rs. 146 Crs (2025), Rs. 151 Crs (2026) and Rs. 157 Crs (2027).
New match fee rule introduced for players
For the very first time in the IPL history, a player will earn a match fee if picked in the playing XI of a team. Each playing member of the team, including the Impact player, will get a match fee of INR 7.5 lakh each. This is an additional bonanza from players’ contract with the franchise.
For instance, Rohit Sharma is retained or auctioned by Mumbai Indians for INR 15 crore then the player will take the whole amount. Additionally, the Indian cricketer will earn INR 1.05 crore approximately if he plays all the matches of a season.
What action IPL takes if a player picked/retained in auction withdraws from tournament?
If a player, who is picked or retained by an IPL franchise, withdraws before the start of the season then he will be banned from putting his name in the player auction for two seasons. This was one of the requests made by a few franchise owners in the BCCI-owners meeting in July.
The old uncapped player rule is back
Any Indian player who hasn’t played international cricket in the last five years or doesn’t hold a central contract under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be considered as an uncapped player. This rule won’t be applicable for overseas players.
For instance, MS Dhoni, who played his last international match in the Indian shirt in July 2019, will get into the uncapped category. This uncapped player rule was applicable until IPL 2021, but was removed by the organisers.
Will the Impact player rule continue?
The Impact player rule will continue for the next three seasons (IPL 2025-IPL 2027). The Impact player will also earn a match fee.
