FA Cup: Aston Villa to wear special kit against West Ham to honour 150th club anniversary

New Delhi: Celebrating 150 years of rich footballing history, Aston Villa and adidas have collaborated to create a stunning commemorative kit that pays homage to the club’s storied past. This anniversary jersey, a sleek black design inspired by the club’s earliest days, will be worn by the players in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup against West Ham United on Friday evening.

Both Aston Villa and West Ham are clubs known for wearing claret and blue kits but Villa win don this new all black kit against the Hammers. The kit draws inspiration from Villa’s first-ever recorded match, nearly 150 years ago, and is modelled on the black kits worn during the club’s formative years, before transitioning to the iconic claret and blue colours. This retro design harks back to the team’s early success, including their first major honour, the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1880.

Adding to the historic significance, the shirt features a redrawn version of the Scottish lion rampant crest. The crest made Villa the first team in the UK to wear crests on their playing kits in 1878. It was originally sourced from Scotland by William McGregor, a key figure in Villa’s history and the founder of the Football League. The redesigned crest is authentically recreated from the earliest available sources, serving as a meaningful nod to the club’s pioneering spirit.

Aston Villa’s principal partners, Betano and Trade Nation, have donated their branding space for this special fixture, allowing the jersey’s design to remain purely historic. The absence of sponsors on this special kit also adds to the historic feel of the kit as it ensures that it stays true to the roots of the club and offers a clean look and authentic tribute to the club’s legacy.

The kit also incorporates adidas’ Aeroready technology, blending tradition with modern functionality. It features the brand’s signature three stripes in all black, adding to the minimalist aesthetic while maintaining cutting-edge performance. Beyond the kit, Aston Villa is also launching a complementary culture wear range, allowing fans to celebrate this historic milestone in style.

The special anniversary shirts will go on sale at 9 am GMT on Thursday, January 9, at Villa Park’s store, online at the club’s official shop, and via JD. The launch is part of a season-long celebration of Aston Villa’s heritage, nearly 150 years to the day since the club’s first-ever recorded match. Fans can take part in the festivities by donning this iconic piece of history as the club embarks on the next chapter of its remarkable journey.

After being founded in November 1874, the club are celebrating their 150th year in existence for this entire season and it has been one to remember for the Midlands club. This season marks a return to European football for the club and also serves as their maiden appearance in the UEFA Champions League since the tournament rebranded. The club are competing on both fronts and will look to go deep into the FA Cup as well.

Villa are currently embroiled in the race for European places in the league as they sit eight in the league, just four points off the top four. They’re placed fifth in the UEFA Champions League table having beaten the likes of Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig and are on course for an automatic spot in the knockout rounds of the tournament. Based on current form, they’re also the favourites heading into the FA Cup clash against West Ham and have already beaten the Hammers once before this season.
