New Delhi: Former Real Madrid superstar Sergio Ramos scored to help Liga MX side Monterrey CF secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Champions League 2024-25 runners-up Inter Milan in their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 opener on Wednesday. Led by Ramos, the Mexican club produced a spirited performance to hold Inter to a draw and secure their first point in the tournament.
Monterrey are part of Group E in the 2025 Club World Cup alongside Inter Milan, River Plate and Urawa Reds. The Mexican club were up for a huge challenge in the opening game of the season against Inter at the Rose Bowl Stadium in California on Wednesday. However, Ramos’ header in the first half helped them pull off a draw against the Serie A giants to start the tournament on a high.
Monterrey started well in their opener against Inter and grabbed the lead in the 25th minute when Ramos sent in a towering header into the right corner to open the scoring for his team. The veteran Spanish defender outmuscled Alessandro Bastoni to capitalise on a great ball from Oliver Torres from a corner.
With his brilliant goal, 39-year-old Ramod, a Real Madrid and Spain legend, proved why he is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time. Ramos not only scored but was also seen constantly boosting the morale of his teammates, encouraging them to give their all in the big game.

Inter Milan hit back as Lisandro Martinez scored in the 42nd minute to help the Italian giants equalise in the match. Martinez got on the end of a sublime ball laid by Carlos Augusto and finished it emphatically to get Inter on level terms in the game.
Inter went all out in the late stages of the second half in search of a winner, however, Monterrey held their nerves under pressure to secure a hard-fought point from the game. With their draw, the Mexican club are currently above Inter at the 2nd spot on the Group E points table, despite both teams having a point each.
River Plate beat Urawa Reds 3-1
Meanwhile, Argentina’s River Plate thrashed Japanese club Urawa Reds 3-1 in the first Group E fixture in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 on Wednesday. Facundo Colidio opened the score for River Plate in the 12th minute, before Sebastian Driussi and Maxmiliano Meza scored in the second half to secure a thumping victory for the Argentinian side. River Plate are currently on top of the Group E points table with 3 points.
