New Delhi: A gruesome incident took place on January 22, 2025, between Maheji and Pardhade stations, near Pachora town in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon. The incident occurred when the passengers aboard the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express panicked due to the false rumor of a fire in the train. Several passengers panicked and in a rush to flee, they jumped onto the tracks when they were rammed by the Karnataka Express coming from opposite direction. According to the officials, more than 10 people lost their lives in the accident and around 15 people were injured. Deadliest train accidents in India

Firozabad rail collision

On August 20, 1995, the rail collision took place near Firozabad on the Delhi-Kanpur section of Northern Railway. A passenger train collided with a train which stopped after hitting a nilgai, and 358 people lost their lives in the accident. According to some estimates, the death toll probably crossed 400. Both the trains were headed for New Delhi when the tragic accident occurred.

Odisha train collision

Three trains collided in Odisha’s Balasore on June 2, 2023. First, the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary goods train near Bahanaga Bazar railway station and the former’s 21 coaches were derailed. Out of those 21 coaches, three coaches collided with the oncoming SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express on the adjacent track. The crash killed 296 people and injured over 1,200 people.

Gaisal train collision

On August 2, 1999, two trains carrying about 2,500 passengers collided at West Bengal’s Gaisal station. Due to a signaling error, both trains were using the same track. The trains exploded on impact due to their high speed, and at least 285 people died in the accident.

Khanna rail collision

On November 26, 1998, near Punjab’s Khanna, the Jammu Tawi-Sealdah Express bound for Kolkata collided with six derailed coaches of the Frontier Mail headed towards Amritsar. The accident killed at least 212 people and is known to be among the deadliest train accidents in India.

Pukhrayan train derailment

On November 20, 2016, the Indore-Patna Express derailed near Kanpur’s Pukhrayan. The train was travelling at a very high speed and as a result, 150 passengers died in the accident while 150 people were injured.

Jnaneswari Express train derailment

On May 28, 2010, Jnaneshwari Express train derailed in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district. It was suspected to have been done by the Maoists Naxalites. The accident resulted in the death of at least 148 passengers.
