New Delhi: India made heads turn with their stunning onslaught against Bangladesh in their first innings of the ongoing 2nd Test between the two sides at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. After only 35 overs of action on the first three days of the rain-marred Test match, Rohit Sharma & Co. came all guns blazing with the bat as the hosts looked determined to force a result in the Test match despite less time.
After losing two days of action on Day 2 and 3 due to rain and wet outfield in Kanpur, India bowled out Bangladesh for 233 runs in their first innings on Day 4 on Monday. What followed was a fabulous display of calculated aggression with the bat in Test cricket as the hosts dismantled the Bangladesh bowling attack with a record-breaking display.
Skipper Rohit and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal set the tone by smashing 50 runs in just three overs to set a new record before the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul joined in. Indian batters went berserk to smash 285 runs in just 34.4 overs, overhauling Bangladesh’s first-innings total comfortably and amassing a 55-run lead.
First team in 21st century to declare under 35 overs in Tests
India scripted a historic feat as skipper Rohit declared the hosts’ first innings at 285/9 in the 35th over. India became the first team to declare their innings in less than 35 overs in Test cricket. It was only the second instance overall of a team declaring their innings in less than 35 overs in a match in 70 years of Test history.
The first such instance was in the infamous Test match between South Africa and England in Centurion where the Proteas led by Hansi Cronje decided to forfeit their entire 2nd innings to force a result in the Test match. The Test match later came under match-fixing scanner with Cronje admitting that his decision to declare was part of a match-fixing plan.
However, in India’s case, it was pure intent to force a result in a Test match which once looked destined for a dull draw after two days of complete washout. India managed to reduce Bangladesh to 26/2 in their second innings at stumps on Day 4 and will be hoping to bundle out the visitors as quickly as possible on Day 5 Tuesday to pull off a historic win.
Rohit Sharma-led India became the first team to achieve a remarkable feat in Test cricket in the 21st century after declaring their 1st innings early during the 2nd Test against Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Monday.
