Five Sacred rituals to perform on Jyeshtha Amavasya 2025

Mumbai: Jyeshtha Amavasya is considered one of the most spiritually significant new moon days in the Hindu calendar. Falling in the month of Jyeshtha, this Amavasya is also known as Vat Savitri Amavasya. As per Hindu beliefs, the day holds special importance for performing pitru tarpan (ancestral offerings), daan-punya (charity), and observing fasts to seek blessings from departed ancestors. These sacred rituals are believed to bring peace to the souls of ancestors and eliminate obstacles from one’s life.

This year, Jyeshtha Amavasya will be observed on 27 May 2025, based on the Hindu Panchang. Although the Amavasya tithi begins at 12:11 PM on 26 May and ends at 8:31 AM on 27 May, the day of observance is marked based on the Udaya Tithi (sunrise). Hence, all rituals and practices will be performed on 27 May 2025.

Why Jyeshtha Amavasya Is Spiritually Significant

Jyeshtha Amavasya is considered a powerful day to gain relief from Pitru Dosha (ancestral karma) and to receive the blessings of one’s forefathers. Scriptures suggest that rituals performed on this day—like shraddha, tarpan, and donations—reach the ancestors directly, bringing peace to their souls and prosperity to their descendants. If someone’s birth chart shows Pitru Dosha, remedies performed on this day can help neutralise its effects.

5 Key Rituals to Perform on Jyeshtha Amavasya 2025

1. Offer Tarpan at a Sacred Water Body

Go to a river or any holy water reservoir to offer tarpan in the name of your ancestors. Use black sesame seeds, barley, kusha grass, and water. While offering, chant your ancestors’ names and pray for their peace.

2. Perform Shraddha or Serve the Needy

If possible, perform shraddha by feeding Brahmins and offering them dakshina. If a formal shraddha is not feasible, simply feeding a poor person with love and gratitude is equally meritorious.

3. Donate According to Your Capacity

Giving donations on Jyeshtha Amavasya is considered highly auspicious. You can donate grains, clothes, money, or anything else as per your capacity. Feeding cows green fodder on this day is also considered especially fruitful.

4. Worship the Peepal Tree

Offer water to a Peepal tree and circumambulate it in reverence. Lighting a diya under the tree in the evening is said to please both the ancestors and divine energies.

5. Recite the Pitru Stotra or Pitru Suktam

Chanting sacred hymns like the Pitru Stotra or Pitru Suktam on this day is said to invoke blessings and maintain harmony at home.

By participating in these time-honoured traditions, devotees aim not only to express gratitude but also to ensure peace, prosperity, and the removal of unseen karmic hurdles in their lives.
