Football fan Sister Inah becomes world’s oldest living person at 117

New Delhi: Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun and lifelong football enthusiast, has been confirmed as the world’s oldest living person at nearly 117 years old. Born on 8 June 1908, Canabarro defied childhood fragility to achieve a remarkable life of faith, teaching, and resilience. Now living in Porto Alegre, she holds the title after Japan’s Tomiko Itooka passed away in December, according to LongeviQuest, an organisation that tracks supercentenarians around the globe.

Known for her humour, artwork, and unwavering Catholic faith, Sister Inah credits her longevity to her deep spiritual beliefs. “I’m young, pretty and friendly – all positive qualities that you have too,” she quipped in a recent video, showcasing her cheerful personality.

An ardent fan of the Brazillian club Internacional (Inter), Sister Inah remains a celebrated figure within the club. Every year, the team honours her birthday with cake and decorations in their iconic red and white colours. She declared her love for Internacional, saying “White or black, rich or poor, whoever you are, Inter is the team of the people,”.

Football has been a lifelong passion for Sister Inah, even as her focus remained on teaching and religious work. She spent decades educating children, founding marching bands, and inspiring young minds across southern Brazil. Her contributions earned her recognition from Pope Francis on her 110th birthday.

Her 84-year-old nephew, Cleber Canabarro, often visits Sister Inah, bringing joy to her days. “She lights up when she hears my voice,” said Cleber Canabarro.

Sister Inah now ranks as the 20th oldest person ever documented, a list led by France’s Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122. Despite her advanced age, her love for football and faith continue to inspire those around her, showing that passion truly transcends time.
