Former Celta Vigo skipper Hugo Mallo found guilty of Sexual Assault

New Delhi: After a drawn-out trial that lasted more than five years, Mallo, the current player for Aris Thessaloniki and a former captain of Celta Vigo, has reportedly been found guilty. The event occurred in April 2019 when Celta Vigo visited Espanyol for a La Liga match. Mallo, who was leading his team as captain, is accused of improperly touching the mascot, a woman dressed as a parrot named “Periquita,” as the teams prepared to take the field.

Suspicion was aroused when video from that day showed Mallo embracing the mascot for a longer length of time than he did during earlier contacts. The victim gave her statement in June 2019, describing the incident in detail. The following month, Mallo made his own statement in which he refuted the accusations and asked for the matter to be dropped. His motion was denied, though, and the court case went on.

The victim stated that although Mallo had greeted the male parrot mascot as normal, he had behaved strangely toward her upon arriving. She claimed, that he touched her, prompting her to pull away from the encounter. He did this by putting his hands under her costume. In May 2021, the case was officially classified as a sexual assault after the Ninth Section of the Provincial Court of Barcelona intervened. Though the camera footage was brief, it clearly depicted an interaction that lasted longer than typical, according to the judge presiding over the case.

Mallo has been mandated by the court to pay Ana £844 in compensation, plus interest. In addition, he will have to pay £8.44 a day for 20 months, which comes to just over £5,000 ($6530). Mallo will also cover the case’s procedural expenses. Despite the fact that Mallo has been found guilty, his attorneys have not ruled out appealing the verdict. The 33-year-old football player is said to be considering taking more legal action to contest the court’s decision, and he is still adamant about his innocence.
