Nice: Seven people, including three young children and a teenager, have died in a fire that broke out early Thursday in the southern French city of Nice. Officials are investigating the blaze as a potential arson attack, according to the local prosecutor.
The mayor of Nice stated that images clearly showed hooded individuals pouring petrol into a stairwell during the night, causing the fire. The flames engulfed the upper floors of an apartment block in the Moulins area, near the city’s airport. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the involvement of three young children among the victims and assured that police would “shed light on the circumstances of this terrible tragedy.”
French President Emmanuel Macron condoled the incident and posted on X, “Our hearts go out to Nice after the deadly fire in the Moulins district. I thank the state services and the emergency responders for their actions. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. We stand by them and all the people of Nice. United.”
