New Delhi: Argentina’s Francisco Comesana pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year at the Rio Open 2025 on Saturday as he defeated Australian Open finalist Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals to book a spot in the tournament’s semi-finals. Comesana defeated world no.2 Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
It was the biggest win of his career for Comesana, who is currently ranked 86th in the world. Zverev headed into the clash as the overwhelming favourite and started the game strongly by clinching the first set 6-4. However, the 86th-ranked Argentine staged a brilliant comeback to win the next two sets and pull off a remarkable victory against the German.
Comesana recorded his first-ever victory against a top-five-ranked opponent with his win against Zverev. The Argentine showcased amazing spirit throughout the clash and gave Zverev a run for his money. It was a horrendous performance from the world no.2 on the other hand.
Zverev did well in the first set as he landed two aces to win the set. However, Comesana converted two break points to take the second set. Struggling with his serve, the Australian Open finalist ended up making three double faults and Comesana capitalised on it to clinch the biggest win of his career so far.
