Thousands of protestors in Bangladesh stormed into Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s residence in Dhaka as she resigned in the morning. It was followed by a month-long protest by students against the government’s controversial quota move.
The social media was filled with videos of protestors entering the Ganabhaban, that literally means people’s house, and vandalizing all the places. There was also a video in which the protestors were demolishing the idol of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was considered as the father of the nation, and was one of most important persons in the formation of this country.
With all these, the video also captures protestors looting the home of Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka. Ransack rooms, office, kitchen and steal costly gifts, crockery, garments, furniture and even food items. In some of the visuals protestors can be seen eating leftover food in the house.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in power since 2009, had resisted calls for her resignation for several weeks. However, following a particularly violent day of unrest on Sunday, she was compelled to flee. The clashes between protestors and government supporters resulted in nearly 100 deaths, including 14 police officers. The total death toll since the unrest began in early July has now reached at least 300, according to an AFP tally that includes data from police, government officials, and hospital sources.
The Bangladesh military has historically intervened during periods of political unrest in the country. An official statement from Waker highlighted, “The military has always stood by the people.” In January 2007, the military declared a state of emergency and installed a military-backed caretaker government, which remained in power for two years.
