From Impeachment To Non-Consecutive Terms: 4 Milestones In Trump’s Historic Election Victory

Washington: Donald Trump registered his sweeping victory against Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election on Wednesday. With a thumping victory, Trump managed to return to power as the president of the United States for the second but non-consecutive term. As the Republican nominee won the biggest US polls, the victory also marked a series of groundbreaking milestones in US political history.

Though, a victory of Vice President Kamala Harris would also have made a few other historic firsts, since, after her victory, she would have become the first Black and South Asian woman to hold the office of president.

Here’s a look at four major ways Trump’s election is historic:

Trump To Be Oldest-Elected President

At 78 years old, Donald Trump became the oldest person ever elected to the U.S. presidency. When he is sworn in on January 20, 2025, Trump will surpass Joe Biden , who was 78 when he was inaugurated in 2021. Trump’s vice-presidential running mate, 40-year-old JD Vance, will become the third-youngest vice president in U.S. history, further underscoring the generational divide in the new administration.

First President Having Second Non-Consecutive Term

Trump’s victory marks only the second time in U.S. history that a president has won two non-consecutive terms. He joined the ranks of Grover Cleveland, who served as both the 22nd president (1885–1889) and the 24th president (1893–1897), after losing a re-election bid in 1888. Trump, previously the 45th president, will now take office as the 47th.

Trump To Be First Felony-Convicted President

Trump is poised to become the first president in U.S. history with a felony conviction. In May 2024, a New York jury found him guilty on all 34 counts related to a scheme to influence the 2016 presidential election through a hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Despite the conviction, Trump won the election, marking a significant moment in American political history.

First President To Be Twice-Impeached, Twice-Acquitted

Trump also becomes the first US president to be impeached twice. The first impeachment, in 2019, was related to his dealings with Ukraine, while the second, in 2021, stemmed from his role in the January 6th Capitol riot. In both cases, Trump was acquitted by the Senate, and his electoral victory in 2024 serves as a historic comeback despite these unprecedented challenges.

In the end, Trump’s victory marks a remarkable moment in U.S. history, defined by firsts and records that have never been seen before. While Harris’ potential victory would have been groundbreaking in its own right, Trump’s return to the White House highlights the ongoing shifts in American politics.
