Fugitive Lalit Modi Spotted at Sidhartha Mallya’s Wedding in UK

New Delhi: Former IPL Chief Lalit Modi, a fugitive was seen attending the wedding of Sidhartha Mallya and Jasmine at Vijay Mallya’s estate in Hertfordshire. For the unversed, both Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya are fugitives, wanted for tax evasion and money laundering. Sidhartha Mallya and Jasmine tied the knot at Vijay Mallya’s opulent estate in Hertfordshire. The celebrations included Christian and Hindu ceremonies, attended by friends and family.

Vijay Mallya, the groom’s father, is a fugitive wanted in India for allegedly defrauding banks of over ₹900 crore. Lalit Modi, also a fugitive, is on the run facing charges of tax evasion and money laundering. Lalit Modi was suspended from the BCCI shortly after IPL 2010 for alleged misconduct and financial irregularities, with accusations of defrauding the board of ₹753 crore in collusion with World Sports Group (WSG) officials.

The newlyweds shared two official photos from the wedding on Instagram, captioned “Mr and Mrs Muppet.”  Amidst the opulent celebration, the appearance of Modi and Mallya together ignited a wave of memes and jokes online, highlighting their common legal troubles.

Earlier this year, former IPL Chairman Lalit Modi had announced his son Ruchir Modi as his successor beneficiary from his family’s side in the KK Modi Family Trust with immediate effect. In a social media post, Modi who has been involved in a legal tussle against his mother Bina Modi and sister Charu over a property dispute in the family, also announced his son as the head of his branch of the family. “The present litigation with my mother and sister, is tedious, strenuous and has gone on for long, and even though there have been several rounds of discussions for settlement, there is no end in sight. It has caused and continues to cause me immense distress,” he said in a statement shared on Instagram.

Modi, who pioneered the T20 league Indian Premier League (IPL) — now the richest cricket league in the world, is wanted in India after leaving the country in 2010 for London after being charged of tax evasion, money laundering and manipulating broadcast deals.
