New Delhi: The Indian men’s hockey team won bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday after edging past Spain 2-1 at the Yves Du Manoir Stadium in the French capital. Indian skipper Harmanpreet Singh, who has been the leading goal-scorer of the tournament, netted a brace to help his team overcome a deficit from the second quarter.
Spain captain Marc Miralles got the lead after converting a penalty stroke in the 18th minute. It was Harmanpreet Singh’s drag-flicking skills, one of the core strengths of the Indian team in this Summer Games, that rescued India just in the dying minutes of the second quarter. The Indian skipper put his side in lead just starting in the third minute of the third quarter.
Amit Rohidas, who returned to the Indian side after serving one-match suspension, led the charge at the back, denying Spainish attackers the much-needed equaliser. The intensity charged up once the match moved to the closing minutes with Spain getting enough penalty corners to square off things. It was veteran Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh who made two incredible saves to ensure India didn’t concede in the final minutes and finished his illustrious career on a remarkable note.
The bronze medal in Paris is India’s 13th overall medal in men’s hockey ever since the country won its first gold medal at the 1928 Amsterdem Olympics. The Indian men’s hockey team has won 8 gold medals, one silver, and four bronze medals.
