Washington: Controversy sparked over Donald Trump‘s vice-president running mate candidate JD Vance’s choice of words after he described the UK under the recently elected Labour Party as an “Islamist” country with nuclear weapons.
The Ohio Senator said that he had been discussing with his friend which would be the first “truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon.”
“Maybe it’s Iran, maybe Pakistan kind of counts, and then we sort of decided maybe it’s actually the UK since Labour just took over,” Vance said.
However, Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner played down Vance’s word saying that the latter has a history of making “fruity” remarks.
Upon being asked about working with the US, she said that the newly elected government is going to work with any party that wins the presidential elections.
“We’re interested in governing on behalf of Britain, and also working with our international allies,” she said.
This isn’t the first time Vance made such statements. in one of his first interviews after he was named the Vice Presidential pick, he branded China the biggest threat to America, highlighting the likely hawkish stance of their administration toward Beijing if elected.
In the interview, when asked about the war in Ukraine, Vance said that Trump would negotiate with Moscow and Kyiv to “bring this thing to a rapid close so America can focus on the real issue, which is China.”
“That’s the biggest threat to our country and we are completely distracted from it,” he said.
