Mumbai: In Sanatan Dharma, the river Ganga holds a place of the highest reverence. Believed to be a divine purifier, taking a dip in the Ganga is said to cleanse a person of all sins. This is why Ganga Dussehra—the festival that marks the descent of the sacred Ganga to Earth—is considered an especially auspicious occasion in Hinduism.
On this spiritually significant day, devotees across India immerse themselves in the holy river, offering prayers to Goddess Ganga and Lord Shiva. Besides rituals and bathing, acts of charity are emphasised. However, not all donations are considered beneficial. According to scriptures, giving certain items on Ganga Dussehra may invite negativity or increase difficulties in life.
When is Ganga Dussehra 2025?
As per the Vedic Panchang, Ganga Dussehra will be celebrated on Thursday, 5 June 2025. The Dashami tithi of Shukla Paksha in the Jyeshtha month begins late at night on 4 June at 11:54 PM and ends on 6 June at 2:15 AM. Since the festival is observed based on the Udaya Tithi (day-break rule), all rituals and donations will take place on 5 June.
Auspicious Time for Ganga Snan and Daan
According to the Hindu calendar, the Siddhi Yoga will last until 9:14 AM on Ganga Dussehra. Alongside, Ravi Yoga will be in effect, and Hasta Nakshatra will prevail throughout the night. The Taitil Karan remains until 1:02 PM, after which Gar Karan continues until 2:15 AM the next morning.
These planetary combinations are considered extremely auspicious. Taking a bath in the Ganga and performing charitable acts during this time is believed to bring good health, fulfilment of wishes, and divine blessings.
Items You Should Not Donate on Ganga Dussehra
While charity is highly recommended, certain items are considered inauspicious if donated on this day. After taking a holy dip in the Ganga, avoid giving away broken or damaged items, as this is believed to increase misfortune.
Do not donate sharp objects like knives or blades, black-coloured clothing, or any item that is impure or unclean. These are said to attract negative energies and are considered spiritually harmful. Donating such objects is believed to counteract the positive effects of your Ganga Daan and may even be seen as a sinful act.
To make the most of Ganga Dussehra 2025, participate in the rituals with devotion, follow the auspicious timings, and give with discernment. Let your acts of charity be pure, intentional, and aligned with tradition—for blessings that cleanse the soul and uplift your life.
