Gerald Coetzee ruled out of 2nd Test vs Sri Lanka and Pakistan series due to injury

New Delhi: South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to start on December 5. The 24-year-old will also miss the upcoming all-format tour of Pakistan. The Proteas will face Pakistan in 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and two Test matches, starting from December 10 to January 7.

He experienced discomfort while bowling on the fourth day and underwent scans after the stumps. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that he suffered a strain in his right groin muscle. According to CSA, Coetzee’s recovery will take four to six weeks and he might also miss the start of SA20 League.

The pacer is a part Joburg Super Kings (JSK) franchise and they will face MI Cape Town on January 11 in their first match. South Africa has called up fast bowler Kwena Maphaka for the second Test against Sri Lanka to replace Coetzee.

Uncapped DP World Lions fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been added to the squad,” read the statement from Cricket South Africa.

South Africa moved to second spot in WTC points table

South Africa won the first Test match against Sri Lanka by 233 runs in Durban and moved to the second place in the World Test Championship (WTC) table. Temba Bavuma and Co. bundled out for 191 runs in the first innings after Sri Lanka opted to bowl first. In reply, Marco Jansen picked up 7 wickets as Sri Lanka bowled out for just 42 runs. Tristan Stubbs and Bavuma scored sensational hundreds as South Africa declared their second innings on 366/5. Chasing the 516 runs target  Sri Lanka only managed to score 282 runs in the second innings and lost the match by 233 runs.
