Mumbai: Independence Day commemorates India’s liberation from over 200 years of British colonial rule, achieved after years of struggle that began in 1857. Every year, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort and addresses the nation. Citizens across the country celebrate by participating in flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, cultural events, and patriotic programs in schools and other institutions.

As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign returns, encouraging citizens to proudly display the national flag at their homes. This marks the third consecutive year of the campaign, which runs from August 9 to 15, 2024, continuing the tradition of fostering a strong sense of patriotism among the people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading the charge for this year’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ movement. He also took to Twitter, urging everyone to join in the celebration by changing their profile pictures to the tricolour and sharing selfies on the official website.

This year’s theme centres on the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ or Developed India.

What is Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign?

Launched in 2022 as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign encourages citizens to bring the national flag home and display it to commemorate India’s independence. The Ministry of Culture initiated this campaign to instill a deep sense of patriotism in people and raise awareness about the importance of the national flag. Over the years, participation has grown, with many sharing greetings and photos of the tricolour to expand the campaign’s reach.
