New Delhi: India will take on Sri Lanka in the three-match T20I series, starting on July 27. Many IPL stars from both sides will be in action during the T20I series.
Sri Lanka’s young fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana opened up on Chennai Super Kings’ massive role in his international career success. He joined CSK as a replacement for Adam Milne in IPL 2022.
Pathirana only played two matches in his first season at CSK, but it helped him to get his maiden international call-up for Sri Lanka. Pathirana played a big role in CSK’s title-winning campaign during the IPL 2023, picking 19 wickets at an economy of 8.01 in 12 matches.
His brilliant performance in the IPL earned him a permanent spot in the Sri Lankan team and he’s now an important member of the ODI and T20I team.
Pathirana in an interview with Sportstar said that he didn’t get any opportunity in Sri Lanka’s squad after his under-19 but after his debut for CSK, he got selected for Sri Lanka’s main team. He also said that sharing the dressing room with MS Dhoni is very special for youngsters.
“After my under-19s, I was not in any squads in Sri Lanka. But since my debut for CSK, I got those chances and got selected for Sri Lanka’s main team. Playing for CSK is a gift from god for me. Until I played for CSK, not many knew me. Sharing the dressing room with Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) is very special for youngsters like me, especially coming from Sri Lanka” Pathirana said on Sportstar.
‘It will be a good challenge against India’: Pathirana
The speedster also talked about the T20I series against India and said that it will be a good challenge as they are coming with a new coach and some new players.
“I think it will be a good challenge. India is coming with a new coach and some new players; their combination will be slightly different. But it will be a good challenge for us because they are world champions. We have a very good side and a lot of talent and potential” said Pathirana.
He also said Sri Lanka had a disappointing T20 World Cup but if they can win this series it will be a huge confidence booster for the next three years.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t do well in the T20 World Cup. But if we can win this series, it will be a confidence booster for the next three years” he added.
