Goa Statehood Day: A throwback to the journey of Goa becoming an independent state from a Portuguese colony

New Delhi: May 30 has been encrypted in golden letters in the history of Goa as it marks the foundation day of the state. Every year, the state celebrates the day with great enthusiasm and pomp. This year, it will be celebrating its 37th statehood day. Goa is the smallest state by area and is situated on the west coast of India. With its breathtaking beaches, it attracts visitors from across the globe and has been listed as one of the best tourist places in the world.

From a Portuguese colony to a Union Territory

Liberated by India in 1961, Goa was a Portuguese colony for over 450 years. Soon after liberation, it was given the title of Union Territory along with Daman and Diu in 1987. Later, it was segregated from Daman and Diu 1987 and was declared an independent state, becoming the 25th state of the Indian Union. The annual observation of the day is the recall of the beautiful history of the state.

The story of becoming a state

The glorious history of the state dates back to 1510, when Alfonso de Albuquerque gained control of the region after defeating Adil Shah of Bijapur. For the next 400 years, the functioning of the region remained under the control of Portuguese rule. Initially, India requested the Portuguese hand over control of the region, but the Portuguese responded negatively. Disappointed with the decision of the Portuguese government, India launched Operation Vijay in 1961, conquering the Daman and Diu islands and Goa on the country’s mainland.

Later, on May 30, 1987, the island territory was bifurcated into two parts. While one part is well known as Daman and Diu, one of India’s Union Territory, the other is known as Goa, one of the 28 states of India. Goa was declared the 25th state of the Republic of India, with Panaji as the state capital and Konkani as the official language. Since then, the state has annually observed its foundation day on May 30.
