New Delhi: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat defeated the undefeated champion Yui Susaki of Japan before storming into the final of the women’s 50kg freestyle category at the Paris Olympics 2024 to script history. Vinesh became the first Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final and will be fighting for the gold medal in the final against USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt on Wednesday, August 07.

Vinesh pulled off one of the upsets of the Paris Olympics after defeating defending Olympic champion and 4-time world champion Susaki in a thrilling pre-quarter-final bout. She then made it to the semi-final after beating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5. In the semi-final, the 29-year-old was up against Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman at the Champ-de-Mars Arena.

She eased past her comfortably with a 5-0 victory to book her spot in the final. Vinesh had a chance to speak to his mother and the rest of her family on a video call from the Champ-de-Mars Arena in Paris after qualifying for the final of the women’s 50kg freestyle category. During the video call, Vinesh promised her mother to return home with the gold medal.

In a video shared by United World Wrestling, Vinesh can be seen interacting with her mother on the video call. The wrestler blows final kisses to her mother, who seemed visibly emotional. Vinesh then goes on to tell her “Gold laana hai! Gold (I will bring gold).”

Vinesh Phogat assures India of 4th medal at Paris Olympics

After beating Guzman in the semi-final, Vinesh is assured of a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 which will be India’s 4th at the Games. She has a chance to become the first ever Indian woman to become an Olympic gold medallist and also the first female wrestler to achieve the elusive feat for the country.

Sakshi Malik, who won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics 2016, is the only female wrestler to have won an Olympic medal for India. Competing at her third Olympics, Vinesh has a chance to brush the horrors of the past and respond to her critics in style by clinching gold medal in Paris.

If Vinesh manages to win gold, she will become only the third Indian to bag an individual gold medal at the Olympics after Neeraj Chopra and Abhinav Bindra, thus joining the duo in elite company.
