New Delhi: Google is celebrating its 26th birthday today and remains the most visited website in the world. Established in 1998, Google has surpassed all other search engines, becoming the leading choice after Yahoo’s decline in the early 2010s.
Owned by Alphabet Inc., Google was ranked by Forbes in 2020 as the second most valuable company in the world, with a brand value of $209 billion USD, only trailing behind Apple. This value is about three times more than that of major brands like Coca-Cola and The Walt Disney Company. With around 92% market share, ‘Google’ was officially added to the dictionary as a verb in 2006, with the phrase ‘Google it’ meaning to search for something online.
Google is celebrating 26 years today
The story of Google began when Sergey Brin and Larry Page met at Stanford University’s computer science program in the late 1990s. Sharing a vision to make the World Wide Web more accessible, they developed a prototype for a better search engine from their dorm rooms. They later moved to a rented garage, and on September 27, 1998, Google Inc. was born.
Much has changed since then, including the logo featured in today’s Doodle, but Google’s mission remains the same: to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Billions of people worldwide use Google for searching, connecting, working, playing, and much more.
The story behind Google Doodles
The first Google Doodle was a simple out-of-office message, but over 25 years, Doodles have grown into a global phenomenon celebrating heroes, events, culture, places, and more.
