About Google Doodle
A Google Doodle is a unique and temporary change to the Google logo on its homepage, designed to celebrate holidays, events, achievements, and notable historical figures. The first Doodle was merely a basic out-of-office message, but over the past 25 years, Doodles have evolved into a worldwide phenomenon that honours heroes, cultures, places, and much more. Google has produced over 5,000 Doodles throughout the years.
In Google’s early days, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin planned to attend the annual Burning Man festival in Nevada. To inform users of their absence and handle any inquiries during this period, they opted for an unconventional ‘out of office’ message. They replaced the second ‘O’ in the Google homepage logo with the ‘Burning Man’ symbol, creating the first-ever Google Doodle.
Interestingly, this initial Doodle was launched less than a week before Google officially became a company. Hence, Google Doodles are older than Google, Inc. itself!
In the early days, senior leaders at Google were having some fun when they suggested depicting the company logo being abducted by aliens. However, the art team took this idea seriously and created not one, but five alien takeover Doodles—one for each day of the week. This was how the first-ever Doodle series happened.
In May 2000, illustrator Ian David Marsden crafted five Doodles showing aliens encountering the Google logo and then transporting it to Mars. Unlike most Doodles, which commemorate specific dates or milestones, this series was created purely for amusement.
