Graham Thorpe: Ex-England cricketer died after being hit by train, body identified by fingerprints

New Delhi: A day after Amanda Thorpe made a shocking revelation that his husband and former England cricketer Graham Thorpe committed suicide, there was more shock in store for the cricket fraternity.

According to the latest reports, Thorpe died after being struck by a train near his home in Surrey. Thorpe died aged 55 last week and his wife later revealed that he took his own life and had been suffering from depression and anxiety for more than two years

British media quoted the police force as saying, “Officers were called to Esher railway station at 8.26 am (local time) on 4 August to reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

The body of Thorpe was identified by his fingerprints.

The ex-England batter and father of four died from multiple injuries after being struck by a train, the court was told.

He took his own life on August 4 after suffering from depression and anxiety for more than two years.

The inquest opened at Surrey Coroner’s Court on Tuesday with Simon Wickens, the county coroner, expressing his condolences for Thorpe’s family in this difficult time.

Wickens was quoted as saying: “The reason for the inquest is the unnatural nature of the medical cause of death, mainly traumatic injuries when Graham Paul Thorpe was struck by a train.”

He also revealed that the British Transport Police officers identified Thorpe by his fingerprints the day after his death.

Thorpe’s long battle with anxiety and depression

Thorpe’s wife revealed on Monday that his husband was battling depression and anxiety for the past two years. She also revealed that the former Surrey batter tried to take his life in 2022.

He was declared seriously ill in May 2022 following a previous suicide attempt and underwent a long stay in an intensive care unit.

Thorpe featured in 100 Test matches and 82 ODIs for England, scoring over 9,000 runs for his country, including 16 Test tons.
