Moscow: A spine-chilling video surfaced showing ‘unidentified’ gunmen opening fire on people in Dagestan on Sunday which claimed the lives of 15 cops, one priest and several civilians.
The attack occurred on Sunday, June 23, when a group of armed men opened fire on two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a police post in two cities. Following the shooting, thick smoke rose from the synagogue.
‘Dagestan is Boiling’
The video shared by a user on social media platform X shows three gunmen dressed in black opening fire.
The Dagestan’s Interior Ministry said, “Unidentified people fired at a synagogue and a church with automatic weapons.”
Dagestan Public Monitoring Commission Chairman Shamil Khadulaev said, “According to the information I received, Father Nikolay was killed in the Church in Derbent, they slit his throat. He was 66 years old and very ill.”
Russia’s National Anti-Terrorist Committee said that these attacks in the predominantly ‘Muslim region’ have had a history of armed militancy as terrorist acts.
Russia Suspects Foreign Connection
In a video statement briefing on the incident, Governor Sergei Melikov said that Six “bandits” were “liquidated.” He claimed these attacks might have been prepared from abroad in connection with what the Kremlin calls the ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine in an apparent attempt to link the attacks to it.
The region is currently said to be under control of the law enforcement and local authorities, vowing that the investigation of these attacks will continue until all the sleeping cells of the militants are uncovered.
In March, gunmen opened fire on a crowd at a concert hall in suburban Moscow, which killed 145 people. An affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Russian officials also sought to link Ukraine to the attack without providing any evidence. Kyiv has vehemently denied any involvement. (AP)
