Mumbai: Every year, Guru Purnima, a festival of profound importance to Sanatan Dharma, is celebrated with great enthusiasm on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha in Ashadha. The festival will be observed on Sunday, July 21, 2024. On this auspicious day, known also as Ashadha Purnima and Guru Purnima, those who bathe, donate, and receive the blessings of their gurus are believed to prosper and be happy.

In accordance with the Hindu Panchang, the full moon day of Ashadha is scheduled to begin on July 20 at 5:59 PM and conclude on July 21 at 3:46 PM. As the sunrise (Udaya) date holds significant importance in Sanatan Dharma, Guru Purnima will take place on July 21.
Guru Purnima puja vidhi
On Guru Purnima, devotees should rise early and meditate on the divine. In addition to bathing and wearing clean clothes, they should chant the following mantra while offering water to the Sun God (Surya Dev):
Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah
After this, devotees should sit at their place of worship and offer Lord Vishnu and Sage Vyasa flowers, incense, lamps, rice, turmeric, and other items. They should then light a lamp and perform the aarti. It is recommended to read the Guru Chalisa and Guru Kavach with a sincere heart. Finally, devotees should pray for wisdom, knowledge, and peace in their lives, and offer fruits, sweets, and kheer to the deities. It is considered highly auspicious on this day to serve one’s guru and donate food, money, and clothes to the needy.
