Gwalior set to host 1st India game since Sachin Tendulkar’s historic maiden ODI double century

Gwalior set to host 1st India game since Sachin Tendulkar’s historic maiden ODI double century

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday confirmed that the 1st T20I between India and Bangladesh has been shifted from Dharamsala to Gwalior. The series opener which was scheduled to be played at the HPCA Stadium on October 06 will now be played at the newly-constructed Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Gwalior.

The 1st T20I between India and Bangladesh will mark the return of international cricket to the city for the first time since the historic ODI match between India and South Africa on February 24, 2010, where the legendary Sachin Tendulkar became the first man to smash a double century in the fifty-over format.

The Master Blaster slammed a magnificent knock of unbeaten 200 off 147 balls in the game which was played at Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior. Tendulkar opened the batting with Virender Sehwag in the game and the pair could only add 25 runs for the 1st wicket. However, the Master Blaster shifted gears seamlessly after Sehwag’s dismissal and took the South African bowlers to the cleaners en route to one of the greatest knocks in ODI history.

Tendulkar completed his maiden ODI double ton off a single off Charl Langeveldt on the 3rd delivery of the last over of India’s innings. The Master Blaster became the first male batter in cricket history to score a double century in ODIs and broke former Pakistan batter Saeed Anwar’s (194) record for the highest individual score in the 50-over format.

Sehwag broke Tendulkar’s record a year later with a sensational 219-run knock in an ODI against West Indies in Indore in 2011. Sehwag became the second batter in the world after the Master Blaster to score a double ton in ODIs. Since, Sachin 9 batters have managed to breach the 200-run mark in ODIs with current India ODI skipper Rohit Sharma holding the record for doing it the most times.

Rohit has as many as three double centuries to his name in ODIs, the most by any batter in the world. The Hitman’s 264-run knock against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in 2014 remains the highest individual score by any batter in the fifty-over format.

1st international match at Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium

The 1st T20I between India and Bangladesh will also be the inaugural international match at the new Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Gwalior. The construction work of the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium began in 2011 in Gwalior and the stadium was inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in June this year.

International cricket is all set to return to city of Gwalior for the first time since the game which saw Sachin Tendulkar become the first man in ODI history to score a double ton in the format.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
