Common infections during pregnancy are UIT (urinary tract infections), vaginal infections, flu, toxoplasmosis, and foodborne illnesses like listeria. These infections can be caused by various factors such as eating contaminated food, close contact with those who are infected, poor hygiene, or being exposed to harmful environments.

Dr. Manju Gupta – Senior Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Noida, in an interaction with News9Live, said that certain infections like rubella or cytomegalovirus may not show some visible symptoms during the initial phase but they can still harm the baby. This is why pregnant women must take utmost care of their health to prevent the risk of severe infections during pregnancy. The expert also shared tips to prevent infections during pregnancy.

Tips to Prevent Infections during Pregnancy

  1. Stay up to date with vaccinations: Pregnant women are advised to be up-to-date with their vaccinations. This can include vaccines like flu shot and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis). These vaccines are generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy. They help protect both the mother and the unborn baby from severe infections. Always consult your doctor before taking any vaccination during the pregnancy to ensure safety.
  2. Wash hands frequently: Practicing good hygiene habits during pregnancy is vital. It is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent the risk of infections. Ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly with the help of soap or sanitizer before eating, after using the washroom, after touching raw foods, and after being the public places. Keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer handy while going outdoors.
  3. Drink plenty of water: Infections like UTIs (urinary tract infections) are frequent during pregnancy. It can cause serious complications if overlooked or not treated promptly. Pregnant women should drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. This can help flush out bacteria from your urinary system. Always wipe from front to back after using the washroom to reduce the risk of UITs. Avoid holding your pee for longer durations.
  4. Maintain proper vaginal hygiene: Vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections are quite common during the pregnancy. These infections can be prevented by following proactive measures suggested by your doctor. Avoid wearing tight underwear. Always wear breathable cotton underwear. Do not use scented soaps or vaginal douches down there. Keep the vaginal area always clean and dry. If you notice any type of abnormal symptoms like itching or burning sensation then immediately consult a doctor.
