Hanuman Jayanti 2025: 7 things devotees must never do on this day

Mumbai: As per the Hindu calendar, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated annually on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Chaitra month to commemorate the birth of Lord Hanuman. In 2025, this auspicious occasion falls on 12 April. Devotees across India prepare to honour the revered deity known for his unwavering devotion, strength, and celibacy. However, there are several traditional practices and taboos associated with this day that believers are advised to observe strictly.

According to religious customs, certain acts are considered inauspicious on Hanuman Jayanti and may hinder the spiritual sanctity of the occasion.

What to Avoid on Hanuman Jayanti

From avoiding certain food items to specific rituals during worship, here are the key things one must not do on this day:

1. Worship is forbidden during Sutak period

If there has been a recent death in the family or if a lunar or solar eclipse has occurred, the period is considered ‘Sutak’ and performing Hanuman worship is strictly prohibited during this time, according to religious tradition.

2. Women should avoid touching Hanuman idols

As Hanuman is regarded as a celibate (Brahmachari), it is traditionally believed that women should refrain from touching his idol during puja on Hanuman Jayanti. Doing so is considered inauspicious.

3. Do not use Charanamrit for bathing the deity

Unlike other deities, Lord Hanuman is not bathed with Charanamrit (holy water used in pujas). It is considered inappropriate to use Charanamrit during his worship rituals.

4. Avoid wearing black or white clothing

Since red is considered Lord Hanuman’s favourite colour, devotees are advised to wear red attire during the puja. Wearing black or white is believed to bring negative energy and should be strictly avoided.

5. Replace old idols or images before the festival

If your home has an old or damaged idol or image of Lord Hanuman, it should be respectfully immersed in water before the festival. A new idol or image should be brought in for the celebration.

6. Refrain from consuming salt while fasting

Those observing a fast on Hanuman Jayanti should completely avoid salt in their meals. Additionally, any items donated on this day should not be consumed by the donor themselves, as it is deemed inauspicious.

7. Avoid tamasic (impure) foods and behaviours

Devotees must stay away from foods and substances like garlic, onion, alcohol, meat, and tobacco. Arguments, foul language, and expressions of anger should also be avoided to maintain the day’s spiritual sanctity.

By following these traditional guidelines, devotees believe they can seek the blessings of Lord Hanuman and invite peace, protection, and prosperity into their lives.
