Mumbai: Every year, the vibrant festival of Hariyali Teej is celebrated on the third day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the Sawan month. This auspicious festival, dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, sees married women dressing in traditional attire and adorning themselves with sixteen ornaments. They offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, fasting for the long life and happiness of their husbands and their own undivided fortune.

Hariyali Teej is significant not only for married women but also for unmarried girls. On this day, unmarried girls observe fasts with the hope of finding a suitable and desired groom. It is widely believed that worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on Hariyali Teej brings undivided fortune, helps in finding a desirable spouse, and enhances prosperity and happiness in life.

Why is Hariyali Teej celebrated?

Hariyali Teej, falling in the Sawan month, is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The festival holds substantial importance as it commemorates the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, a significant event described in various mythological tales.

Hariyali Teej mythological significance

Legend has it that Goddess Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, was the first to observe the Hariyali Teej fast. Her unwavering devotion pleased Lord Shiva, who accepted her as his consort. This day thus marks the celebration of their reunion, a tradition that has been honoured since ancient times. Consequently, unmarried girls also observe this fast, hoping to overcome marriage obstacles and find their ideal groom.

Significance of decoration on Hariyali Teej

On Hariyali Teej, married women embellish themselves with sixteen ornaments before performing worship rituals for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This adornment is highly significant as it is believed to please Goddess Parvati, who then blesses them with her grace. Even if one cannot complete all sixteen adornments, it is essential to bathe, wear new clothes, and apply bangles, bindi, sindoor, and mehndi to honour the occasion.

Mantras to chant on Hariyali Teej

Chanting specific mantras during the Hariyali Teej worship is considered highly auspicious. While worshipping Lord Shiva, the mantra Om Namah Shivaya should be chanted, and during the worship of Goddess Parvati, the mantra Om Umayai Namah is recommended.

Hariyali Teej is a time of deep devotion and celebration, embodying the essence of tradition and the reverence of divine blessings.
