Harris Faces Political Headwinds as Fears of Recession and War Loom Over Campaign

As the U.S. election approaches, Vice President Kamala Harris faces a growing challenge from two looming crises: recession and war. Though neither is a certainty, each could significantly impact Harris’ campaign at a critical juncture.

In the next 90 days, Republicans plan to treat Harris as if she were the incumbent. This means they will hold her responsible for every headline-grabbing crisis.

Harris’ 1st challenge is fear of recession

The first major test of Harris’ political honeymoon came on Monday, when the stock market experienced its worst drop since 2022. This downturn was largely driven by a dimming U.S. economic outlook. Experts blame the Federal Reserve for keeping interest rates high despite falling inflation, reflecting its political independence and concern about a potential resurgence in prices. A massive market meltdown in Japan, triggered by the surging yen, also contributed to the market panic.

What are the Republicans saying?

Republicans seized the opportunity to place blame on the White House, eager to dominate a news cycle marked by tightening polls and speculation about Harris’ running mate. Top allies of former President Trump flooded social media with the phrase “Kamala Crash” and videos of Harris advocating for President Biden’s economic policies.

“STOCK MARKETS CRASHING. I TOLD YOU SO!!! KAMALA DOESN’T HAVE A CLUE,” Trump declared in one of at least eight Truth Social posts criticizing Harris for the market collapse.

Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), Trump’s running mate, accused Harris of being “too afraid to answer media questions” and called for the “steady leadership” he said Trump provided during his first term.

While Harris may not yet bear the full weight of Biden’s economic troubles, early signs suggest that could change if recession fears persist.

Harris’ 2nd challenge is the looming risk of wider war

Kamala Harris’ 2nd big challenge is the looming risk of a wider war in the Middle East. During Trump, tensions in the region were minimal. Under Biden and Harris, the region has drifted away towards conflict. If a wider war between Iran and Israel breaks out, Harris, as a member of the incumbent party, will struggle.
