He left his political career: KKR star praises sacrifices made by Gautam Gambhir to win IPL 2024

New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Harshit Rana revealed the sacrifices made by mentor Gautam Gambhir to help the franchise end their title drought and win the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title. Gambhir returned to KKR as a mentor ahead of IPL 2024 and guided them to their third title in what turned out to be a memorable season.

Gambhir, who was the last captain to have led KKR to an IPL trophy before this year, left his role as a mentor at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to return to KKR. His return not only lifted the spirits in the KKR dressing room but also saw the team’s fortunes change on the field as he helped them bring an end to a decade-long title drought.

When asked if Gambhir received undue credit and outshone the efforts of captain Shreyas Iyer after KKR’s IPL 2024 title triumph, pacer Rana highlighted the hard work put in by the former India batter and the sacrifices made by him to help KKR win the elusive trophy. Rana lauded Gambhir for sacrificing his political career and keeping everything aside to put all his efforts in helping KKR win.

“Gambhir Bhaiya left his political career and everything behind for KKR. He left politics and came back to KKR, and he worked day and night hard just to make KKR win the trophy. He is so involved in KKR. I am genuinely telling you that he did his best to win this trophy. He left everything just to win the KKR trophy. So, sir, why shouldn’t he get this honour?” Rana told news anchor Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel.

Gambhir worked in tandem with head coach Chandrakant Pandit and other support staff at KKR to script a fairytale season for the franchise. He made some key decisions in the dressing room, including the promotion of Sunil Narine as an opener and preferring Phil Salt over Rahmanullah Gurbaz which paid off and helped KKR in going the distance in the tournament.

Gambhir was a Member of Parliament (MP) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Delhi from 2019 to 2024. He didn’t contest the Lok Sabha elections this year and decided to put all his focus on his cricketing assignment with KKR.

Gautam Gambhir set to take over as India head coach

Gambhir’s success with KKR saw him emerge as one of the frontrunners to replace Rahul Dravid as the next head coach of the Indian cricket team. As per reports, BCCI has already held discussions with the former India opener and his appointment is imminent. BCCI is likely to make an official appointment regarding Gambhir’s appointment after the end of India’s campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
