New Delhi: Ahead of bracing for the monsoon season, Maharashtra is noticing a potential surge in dengue fever cases. A recent data from the state health department shows a significant spike in dengue cases as compared to the same period the previous year. In the last five months of the year, the state registered about 1,800 dengue cases and this rise in cases has also prompted intensified surveillance efforts.
From January till May this year, the blood samples of people were tested for dengue which found they were positive.
What could be the possible reasons behind the sudden spike in cases?
Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai shared with News9, “Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes. It happens when an individual is bitten by a mosquito that might be infected and carrying a dengue virus. The humidity in the air can stir up pollution and worsen air quality, increasing the risk of health conditions such as viral infections, and dengue. Individuals might experience symptoms such as sudden high fever, rashes, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, swollen glands, and nausea.”
“Mosquitoes like Aedes are the leading cause of dengue breeds during the monsoon season. Water stored in open containers, buckets, or flower pots can become a shelter for these dangerous mosquitoes. This is why it is crucial to take necessary precautions to combat again such waterborne diseases, as Maharashtra is on high alert due to a spike in dengue cases ahead of monsoon season,” added Dr Agarwal.
Precautionary measures to take
Sharing some precautionary measures against dengue surge, Dr Agarwal said, “Using insect repellents and mosquito nets works wonders when it comes to protecting yourself from harmful diseases like dengue by making sure that mosquitoes are less attracted to you. Individuals can also try wearing full-coverage clothes such as full pants and long-sleeved shirts for better protection. Keep your windows and door shut especially after sunset to block insects and mosquitoes from entering your house.”
