How can Afghanistan qualify for the semifinals in T20 World Cup 2024? All scenarios explained

New Delhi: Afghanistan defeated Australia by 21 runs at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St Vincent on June 23, Sunday. The Afghans took the revenge of ODI World Cup 2023 loss against mighty Australia. Afghanistan openers gave a solid start to their team by extending their opening partnership by 118 runs and went on to post 148/6 in their 20 overs. In reply, Australia were bundled out for just 127 runs on a tricky wicket. Gulbadin Naib’s superb four-fer helped his side to get their first win in the Super Eight stage.

Afghanistan Qualification Scenario:

Afghans’ historic win against Australia keeps their hopes alive for the semifinals. With this loss, the Kangaroos and Afghanistan points are now equal in the table but Australia will play their last Super Eight game against India, whereas Afghanistan will play against Bangladesh.

Afghanistan are now on the verge of qualifying for the semi-finals for the first time in the history of any ICC mega event. The Afghans simply have to beat Bangladesh in their final Super Eight game and will pray for India to beat Australia.

Even if Australia beat India by the smallest margin of one run, then Afghanistan have to beat Bangladesh by 36+ runs to overtake Australia’s net run rate (assuming 160 runs by the team batting first)

Australia on brink of knock-out

Australia’s chances of qualifying for the semis were dented by the Afghanistan team and now Australia will face India in a do-or-die match at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on June 24, Monday.

As of now, Afghanistan are the fan favorites against Bangladesh who have been winless in the Super Eight stage, Australia want Bangladesh to beat Afghanistan and then if they beat India they will qualify for the semis.

But if Afghanistan can pull off the match against the Bangla Tigers then Australia will have to beat India by a big margin.

After the historic win against Australia, Afghanistan’s hopes of the semi-finals are looking quite achievable. Let’s look at the qualification scenario of Afghanistan for the semis of the T20 World Cup.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
