How Issue of Immigration Has Become Burning Topic In 2024 US Presidential Polls | EXPLAINED

Washington: With just nine days left for the 2024 US Presidential polls, the topic of immigration became one of the contentious issues in the race to the White House. 

During his election campaign, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump pledged to implement a significant overhaul of Washington’s immigration policies. He committed to executing the “largest” domestic deportation operation in U.S. history for undocumented immigrants and promised to reassess current refugee programs if re-elected.

Trump Pledges To End Birthright Citizenship For Children of Illegal Immigrants

The Republican leader has vowed to eliminate birthright citizenship for the children of immigrants living in the US illegally, raising concerns among various diaspora communities, including those from Bangladesh , India, and Pakistan .

Many immigrants, including from India and other South Asian nations, fearing a backlash if Republican hopeful Donald Trump wins the poll, news agency PTI reported.

Trump’s Promise ‘Legally Questionable’

Multiple pro-immigration advocacy groups have criticized Trump for his immigration rhetoric, arguing that ending birthright citizenship is legally dubious since it is protected by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Kamala Harris says ‘Immigration System Needs To Be Fixed’ 

On a surprise note, Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Kamala Harris has also underlined to fix the issue of illegal immigration. 

“US immigration system is broken and requires legislative measures to fix it,” Harris said at one of her campaigns recently. 

Trump Slams Kamala Harris For Bringing ‘Migrant Gangs’ In US  

Former US President Trump accused Harris of bringing in “migrant gangs and illegal alien criminals” into the US, adding that “her policy of importing migrant gangs is a crime against our country.”

A survey by Pew Research revealed that supporters of Trump and Harris have differing views on mass deportations, although they both support border security. Nearly 88 per cent of Trump supporters favor mass deportations of immigrants residing in the country illegally.

Harris Supporters Not In Favour of Mass Deportations

In contrast, only 27 percent of Harris supporters favor mass deportations, while 72 percent oppose them, according to the survey. Additionally, 37 percent of Trump supporters believe that undocumented immigrants should be allowed to live and work in the U.S. if they are married to American citizens, whereas 80 percent of Harris supporters agree with this view. 

To win the race for the White House, the successful candidate will have to secure 270 of the 538 electoral votes up for grabs.

The seven key swing states which are seen to be crucial to determine the election results are Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Nevada.
