How much exercise do you need to reverse the damage caused by sitting all day?

New Delhi: Sitting for long hours a day is one of the key reasons responsible for obesity, heart disease, hypertension, and other severe health problems. This is often experienced by working professionals and students, but the fact remains that the repercussions are borne by all equally. But is there a way out of the vicious sedentary lifestyle cycle? According to health experts, all it takes is 15 minutes of exercise to counteract the damage caused by desk jobs. A global study also found that workers can work towards improving mental health through simple exercises and movements.

ASICS conducted the research and it found that even two hours of a desk job can take a toll on mental health in the long run. The study also noted that stress levels can peak after four work hours. However, this can be combated with only 15 minutes of exercising on a working day. When participants begin to move during work days, they feel more relaxed, resilient, and tranquil and experience less stress.

What are the best workouts for mental health?

Additionally, not getting any workout can cause significant damage to mental health. On the other hand, exercise keeps the body fit and disease-free and protects the brain against any form of cognitive decline. Some of the simplest workouts to combat the negative effects of long sedentary hours are:

Squats
Lunges
Walking
Arm raises
Wrist stretches
Spinal twists
Shoulder shrugs
Shoulder rolls

Stretching can also help reduce rigidity caused by long sitting hours. It could also fix the posture and this can be achieved easily by mobilising the spine, expanding the chest, and rolling the neck and shoulders. Going for a brisk walk can also do the trick. It was also found that ASICS, which is a global mind study, involving 26000 people, found an association between a sedentary lifestyle and mental health. It recorded declining scores in people who remained inactive for long hours.
