New Delhi: The Sensex on Tuesday closed at 78,139.01, down 109.12 points or 0.14 per cent, while the Nifty was down 0.10 points to 23,644.80, in what was the last trading session of calendar year 2024. However, both indices closed over 8 per cent higher on a year-on-year basis, according to market data. While the Nifty was up 8.75 per cent, the Sensex closed 8.12 per cent higher on a year-on-year basis.
Overall, the Indian stock market closed in green for the 9th straight year. Among key indices, the Nifty Midcap 150 closed higher for the 5th straight year. The Nifty Smallcap 250 index closed in green for the second straight year.
How Nifty indices performed in 2024
Among Nifty indices, the Nifty pharma index ended the year as the top gainer in its best year since 2020. The Nifty IT index hit the 46,000 mark for the first time this year, ET Now reported. The Nifty Auto index closed higher for the 5th straight year led by gains in automobile manufacturing giant Mahindra and Mahindra.
The Nifty PSU Bank index also closed in the green for the 4th consecutive year. Nifty metals, bank and energy indices closed higher for the 4th, 5th and 9th straight year, respectively. In an indicator of consumer trends, the Nifty FMCG index declined for the first time in 4 years. The Nifty50 flagship index crossed the 26,00-mark for the first time in 2024.
