New Delhi: The Income Tax (I-T) Department allows accredited e-Return Intermediaries (ERIs) to complete a tax payer’s Income Tax Return (ITR) filing process on his behalf. There are a total of 50 ERIs that the I-T Department has authorised to file taxes on behalf of the tax payer. These ERIs are authorised intermediaries who can file ITR and perform other functions on the behalf of the taxpayer.
ITR filing: Three types of ERIs
Term insurance of Rs 1 crore: How is the premium calculated?
Type 1 ERIs: These can file ITRs using the I-T Department’s approved utilities on the e-filing portal.
Type 2 ERIs: These types of intermediaries have their own software which are integrated with the e-filing portal. They use their own software to file ITR of taxpayers
Type 3 ERIs: These have their own offline software utilities which are used to perform ITR filing process of the tax payer.
How to avail services of an ERI?
First, the taxpayer must select which ERI he wants to avail services of.
He can go on this link of the e-filing portal – https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/eriList and check out the list of I-T Depatment accredited ERIs.
He can also search for a list of ERI available in his city.
Once he has finalised the intermediary, then, he needs to authorise the ERI to initiate ITR filing on his behalf.
For this, he will have to add the ERI through the e-filing portal using ‘My ERI service.’
Alternatively, the intermediary too can add the tax payer as a client in the tax portal.
After successfull completion of the ITR filing process, the tax payer will get the acknowledgement on the e-filing portal that his taxes have been filed.
Once, the ERI completes the tax payer’s ITR filing process, then, the income tax payer can go on the tax filing portal and remove the ERI from his account.
