New Delhi: If you received an Income Tax (I-T) department notice after ITR filing for the assessment year 2024-25, don’t lose your sleep over it. Full of jargon and sections, Income Tax matters are usually Greek or Latin to an average citizen. But how does one respond in such a situation? The first thing to do is to keep a cool head and read the notice more than once. If the reason remains unclear, you may seek professional help. But first, try to read it yourself.
I-T notice versus intimation
Chartered account Soumyadipta Das says that one should differentiate between a notice and a simple intimation from the I-T Department. “The I-T Department regularly provides intimation to taxpayers to inform them about the processing of the ITR. It does not require anyone to act,” says Das.
Is the notice meant for you?
One must first try to first ascertain that the notice is addressed to him/her only. Check the following details before proceeding to act:
Names
PAN
Assessment year
Das has also warned against fake notices sent by cyber fraudsters, the only intention of which is to make the user click a link that can lead them to his/her bank account. “Therefore, be extremely careful and do not click on any link sent with the notice before ensuring it to be a genuine one,” he said.
Respond on e-filing portal
To communicate with the I-T Department about the tax notices, one must log in to the e-filing portal. If the department has mentioned any time limit before which you are supposed to comply please maintain that deadline. It is important that you do not compound the situation by failing the deadline.
Reasons behind income tax notice
A notice can be sent if you have evaded tax, concealed income, given incorrect information or false claims in ITRs or even used an inappropriate form. Through a notice, the department might also claim outstanding tax from earlier years.
