What is Bibimbap?

Bibimbap (pronounced bee-bim-bap) literally means ‘mixed rice’ in Korean. Traditionally served in a warm stone bowl, it includes steamed rice topped with seasoned vegetables, a protein, a fried egg, and a generous dollop of gochujang. The magic happens when you mix it all just before eating.

How to make Korean Bibimbap at home

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked short-grain white or brown rice
  • 1 small carrot
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 cup spinach
  • ½ cup bean sprouts
  • 4-5 shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 tsp sesame oil for each veggie
  • 1 tsp soy sauce for seasoning
  • Salt, to taste
  • 100 g minced chicken,( tofu or mushroom for a vegetarian option)
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of sugar
  • 1 egg (fried sunny-side-up)
  • 1 tbsp gochujang
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Seaweed strips or kimchi

Steps to prepare: 

  1. Cook the rice properly and keep it warm. Choose short-grain sticky rice.
  2. Put Spinach in boiling water for 30 seconds and blanch well. Squeeze out hot water and season with salt, soy sauce, and sesame oil.
  3. Sauté carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, and bean sprouts separately with sesame oil and a pinch of salt or soy sauce.
  4. Stir-fry chicken, tofu, or mushrooms in a pan with garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil and a pinch of sugar until cooked properly.
  5. Fry the egg sunny-side-up. The runny yolk adds richness when mixed into the bowl.
  6. Now take a deep bowl and layer with warm rice, add vegetables on top in a corner, and add egg over it.
  7. Now add a spoonful of Gochujang for flavour.
  8. Sprinkle sesame seeds and seaweed strips on top. Serve with extra gochujang or kimchi on the side.
