New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly named Hrishikesh Kanitkar as the head coach of the India A team for the upcoming England tour. The squad, which will be led by Abhinamyu Easwaran, was announced a couple of days back and will take part in the shadow tour, in which they will play three games, including one against the senior Indian cricket team.
According to a Cricbuzz report, Kanitkar will be supported by Subhodeep Ghosh of Assam and Troy Cooley, who will pursue the roles of fielding and bowling coach, respectively. The 18-man squad is expected to leave for England in two batches – on May 25 and 26. The first match, a four-day first-class affair against England Lions, will begin at Canterbury on May 30.
The team will then head to Northampton for the second first-class match that begins on June 6 and will last for four days. The BCCI notified that Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will join the A squad before this (2nd) encounter against England Lions. Following this, the team will be involved in an intra-squad match scheduled behind closed doors, against Team India (Senior Men) in Beckenham from June 13 to 16.
India squad announcement?
The report suggests that the senior Indian team for the five-Test England series will be picked in the last week of May. It was initially said that the team would be selected on May 23, but owing to the suspension and the subsequent resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the scheduled meeting is said to have been deferred, and there will likely be a delay in the selection.
As far as the travelling plans are concerned, the seniors will leave for England on June 6, almost two weeks before the start of the first Test in Headingley (June 20). Earlier reports had suggested that head coach Gautam Gambhir would depart early for England, but as things currently stand, he will apparently travel with the squad as per the normal schedule.
The next four Tests will be played in Birmingham (from July 2), Lord’s (from July 10), Manchester (from July 23), and lastly at the Oval (from July 31).
