‘Humiliated & insulted’: Indian archery coach to return home after being denied accred for Olympics

New Delhi: Indian archery coach Baek Woong Ki has been reportedly said to fly back to South Korea after his accreditation for Paris Olympics was denied by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The prominent South Korean coach wants to discontinue his services although there is still a month left on his contract with the Indian team.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the South Korean coach has told the Archery Association of India (AAI) that he felt ‘humiliated and insulted’ to be treated in an unfair manner. Baek was the one to oversee Indian archers’ preparations in Marseille before they move to Paris for the Olympics Games.

The South Korean stayed in a hotel in Paris while waiting for his accreditation for the quadrennial event, but all of a sudden, his flight ticket was booked for India on Saturday evening, even though the AAI requested the IOA to accommodate him.

“I do not want to continue anymore. I just want to go back to South Korea,” Baek told Hindustan Times.

“I have been preparing with the goal of helping India win a medal for the first time at the Paris Olympics. However, I believe that appointing a foreign coach but excluding (me) from the Olympic Games archery coach is a big mistake by the IOA and a decision that does not follow the original plan and goals,” he added.

Indian archery team’s psychologist’s Visa issues delays arrival in Paris

The AAI submitted a list of six coaching staff for the six-member contingent. The two Indian coaches Sonam T Shering Bhutia (men’s team coach) and Purnima Mahato (women’s team coach) have received the accreditation to stay with the Indian archers in the Games Village.

Meanwhile, physio Arvind Yadav and psychologist Gayatri Madkekar have been granted ‘P category’ cards and they will also get hotel stay, whose expenses are taken care by the sports ministry. Arvind is currently present with the squad but Gayatri is yet to reach the French Capital due to her visa problems, confirmed Sonam T Shering Bhutia to News9Live. She is expected to join the squad on Monday subject to her visa approval.
