New Delhi: Team India defeated Sri Lanka in the third T20I and won the series by 3-0 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Suryakumar Yadav won the ‘Player of the Series’ award in his first T20I assignment as a full-time skipper.
When Sri Lanka needed 9 runs to win in the last two overs, Suryakumar introduced Rinku Singh and himself in the 19th and 20th over instead of going to his premier pacers Siraj and Khaleel. Both picked up two wickets each to take the match in super over.
In the super over, Washington Sundar dismissed Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera in just three balls. Chasing the 3 runs target Suryakumar smashed a boundary on the first ball and defeated Sri Lanka by 3-0 in the T20I series.
The Indian captain played two crucial innings in the series and also took two wickets. He credited his teammates for the win and said that they made his job easy and he had very little pressure on him. He also said that he don’t want to be the captain of the team, he wants to be the leader.
“The amount of skill they have and self-confidence they have – it makes my job easy. The care for each other they show is unbelievable. They made my job easy and when I go into bat, I have little pressure and I just express myself. I don’t want to be the captain. I want to be the leader” Suryakumar said in the post-match presentation.
Indian skipper reveals plan behind Rinku Singh bowling 19th over
After the win, Suryakumar revealed the reason behind taking the decision to bowl Rinku in the 19th over and said Rinku was better suited for that wicket and he made him practice a lot during the net sessions.
“The decision for the 20th over was easy, the difficult part was for the 19th over. Siraj and few others had their overs left. But I felt Rinku was better suited for that wicket because I have seen him bowling and I made him practice a lot at the nets. I felt it was right and that is why I took that call,” he said.
