‘I Worked at McDonald’s to Earn…’: Kamala Harris Remembers Her Days of Struggle

Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has opened up about her working-class upbringing and her early struggles to make ends meet.

In a heartfelt post on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter), Harris shared a childhood photo of herself and her mother, recalling how she worked at fast food chains as a teenager to earn money.

Harris recounted growing up in a middle-class household where her mother had saved for over a decade to buy a home.

She also remembered the day they finally became homeowners, describing her mother’s excitement as a defining moment in her life. Harris also shared that she worked at McDonald’s during college to “earn spending money”.

She wrote in the X post,” In college, I worked at McDonald’s to earn spending money. Some of the people I worked with were raising families on that paycheck. They worked second or even third jobs to pay rent and buy food”.

“That only gets harder when the cost of living goes up,” Harris mentioned in the post, addressing the increasing challenges families have to face as prices rise. She mentioned in the tweet to prioritize reducing living costs and enhancing economic security for all Americans if elected president.

She wrote,” When I am elected President, I will make it a top priority to bring down costs and increase economic security for all Americans.”

Harris’ message comes just ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she will officially accept the party’s nomination. Her candidacy was solidified by overwhelming support in a virtual roll call of delegates, as confirmed by the Democratic National Committee.

With the convention approaching, voters are eager to hear Harris’ stance on key issues, particularly her plans to support the middle class. Harris has previously advocated for abortion rights, mortgage assistance, tax credits for parents, and bipartisan border security solutions aimed at addressing migration from Central America.
