IBD VS IBS: Know the difference between common digestive disorders

New Delhi: IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) are two conditions that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Both cause abdominal pain and changes in bowel movements; however, they are not similar. Though often used interchangeably, they are distinct conditions with different causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Understanding these differences is crucial for appropriate diagnosis and management.

What are the symptoms of IBS?

The symptoms of IBS are:

  1. Bloating
  2. Stomach pain
  3. Diarrhoea
  4. Mucus in stools
  5. Constipation
  6. Feeling that bowel movement is not complete

What are the symptoms of IBD?

A consequence of immunity problems, IBD has some symptoms that are similar to IBS. It causes inflammation in the digestive tract and symptoms like:

  1. Unexplained tiredness
  2. Unexplained weight loss
  3. Abdominal pain
  4. Diarrhoea
  5. Nausea
  6. Vomiting
  7. Rectal bleeding
  8. Fatigue
  9. Joint pain
  10. Anaemia
  11. Skin problems

Talking about the two, Dr. Adil Farooq Malik, Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital Dwarka, New Delhi, said, “IBS is a functional GI disorder that causes recurrent abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. However, despite the symptoms, IBS patients do not have any inflammation or ulceration in the GI tract. Radiological, blood, and endoscopic tests typically reveal normal results. While IBS can affect quality of life, patients can lead a near-normal life with lifestyle improvement and medications.”

In contrast, IBD is a chronic inflammatory disease of the GI tract that causes ulcerations and narrowing (strictures). It includes two conditions – Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Ulcerative colitis affects only the colon, whereas Crohn’s disease may involve any part of the intestine, from mouth to colon. IBD can lead to bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and intestinal obstruction and may also affect other organs such as joints, eyes, and skin. This condition requires specialized care and if left untreated, it may prove detrimental to the patient.

IBS and IBD might have some similar symptoms. Yet, the two are different digestive disorders, find out how.  Health Conditions Health News: Latest News from Health Care, Mental Health, Weight Loss, Disease, Nutrition, Healthcare
