Iconic manager Sir Alex Ferguson reaches the end of long road at Manchester United

New Delhi: One of the, if not the most revered managers of the beautiful game, Sir Alex Ferguson will be leaving his beloved Manchester United at the end of the current season according to the Associated Press. The legendary manager, who retired from managing in 2013, has been serving as the club’s global ambassador ever since and after more than a decade in the role, he will step down from his responsibilities.

This comes off the back of the club’s new owners, INEOS, ending his multi-million pound deal. Sir Alex Ferguson was earning £2.16 million per year in his role as ambassador and was always a familiar sight in the Old Trafford director’s box. The spilt between the two parties is reported to have been amicable and that there wasn’t any animosity between the two. Such a decision was taken taking Sir Alex’s age into the account.

The Scotsman is 82 years old and will turn 83 in December and considering this was one of a number of time consuming responsibilities that he had and wanted to step away from. It goes without saying that Sir Alex Ferguson will always be welcome back at the Old Trafford. Manchester United as a club have been making losses for the last few years and while the new owners do want to correct that, Sir Alex’s departure has nothing to do with it.

As part of the club’s cost saving measures, a lot of jobs have been cut across the board at Manchester Untied since INEOS entered the equation. United reported losses of £113.2 million in its latest accounts and the club spent another £200 million on players in the 2024 summer transfer window. However, it hasn’t yielded them the desired results so far in the season as the club currently sit 14th in the league table after their worst start to a Premier League campaign.

While the club still continues to try and balance it’s books, Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from the club will help towards achieving that. However, his it isn’t known whether his departure from the club will affect the club’s other global ambassadors. Former Red Devils likes Park Ji-sung, Andy Cole, Denis Irwin, Dwight Yorke and Bryan Robson all currently serve as the club’s ambassadors.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy at Manchester United

Even though Sir Ferguson retired from managing Manchester United more than a decade ago, the fact that they’re still struggling to replace such a legendary figure shows how much he achieved at the club. He is the most successful manager of the Premier League, having guided the club to a whopping 13 Premier League titles. In his 27 years in charge of the club, he led them to 38 trophies, the most won by a single manager.

In addition to the Premier League titles, he led the club to five FA Cups and two UEFA Champions League titles, one of which came in 1999, when he guided his team to a historic treble, making Manchester United the first English club in history to win the treble. His efforts and contributions to the game were recognized when he was knighted in 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
