New Delhi: Olympic gold-medallist boxer Imane Khelif will be barred from fighting in the female category at World Boxing competitions until she takes a mandatory sex test. As per the latest policy of the sport’s new governing body, which made sex testing mandatory for all athletes, 26-year-old Khelif is required to undergo a genetic sex screening to participate in the upcoming events.
World Boxing announced the mandate on Friday and specifically mentioned Khelif, saying that the Algerian fighter must be screened before she will be approved to fight at any future events, including the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands next month. Last year at the Summer Games in Paris, Khelif bagged a women’s welterweight gold, amid a row over gender eligibility.
